The Flex System hub can be supplied from a 12-24 volt power source. Each hub ships with a 3 amp 12 volt DC, center post positive, power supply transformer using either 110V or 220V AC power. While 24V power supplies are less common, some legacy systems may still operate at 24 volts and can be supported by the Flex System hub. The power supply that ships with the hub will generally supply power for up to four door strikes connected to the hub, Door and I/O Modules, or an Expander.

The original Flex System hub can receive backup power from a battery via a Molex® Mini Jr Series connector (39-01-2040) . The hub charges the backup battery when transformer input voltage matches battery system voltage.

The Flex II Controller hubs and Expanders each have a barrel input for power plus a two-pin plug-in terminal block. FlexIIPowerPorts.png

The Flex System is designed to supply operating power and communicate to its connected modules using CAT5 Ethernet patch cable with 8P8C connectors (RJ45). Communications use RS-485 protocol. With the exception of the Expander, the cable supplies both communications and power to the module. The Expander communicates via the cable but requires its own power supply. The communications baud rate limits cable length to a 350 foot (105 meter) maximum under ideal conditions. Maximum cable length is further limited by the power requirements of each module. Under most conditions, CAT5 cable may extend 100 feet (30 meters) to any Flex System module.

The ability to extend beyond 100 feet depends on varying conditions such as actual power supply voltage, varying loads, multiple module power/surge requirements, and environmental conditions that affect communications such as electromagnetic interference from machinery, radios, etc.

Because of their lower power requirements, under ideal conditions, cable to these modules may extend out to the maximum of 350 feet (105 meters):

Power Requirements and Maximum Cable Lengths for Flex II System Modules

Power must be supplied to the Controller hub and to Expanders. Systems with more than one or two doors and modules will need to consider supplying more power to the system. This document illustrates some possible configurations. Most equipment may be found from suppliers of Access Control Equipment, Camera Surveillance Equipment, and other electronics suppliers.

The following chart provides maximum power requirements for each of the possible modules and connections in a Flex II system. Note the power requirements shown do not show additional power requirements for connected 3rd party equipment such as Wiegand readers, door strikes, or other door control equipment.

The power requirements should be totaled to determine the best power supply equipment and configuration for the installation.

Module Power @12V Max Cable Length(ft.) Notes
Flex II Controller Hub 500ma   Power source must be rated for 1 Amp or better to allow for modules.
Expander 500ma 350 Power source must be rated for 1 Amp or better to allow for modules.
Flash/RFID Reader 75ma 350
Gen2 Authorizer Keyport 75ma 350
RFID Reader 75ma 350
Weatherized Vault 150ma 250 @ 12V
350 @ 24V
These are maximum distances and assume no voltage drop.
Flex Keypad 75ma 350
Flex Keyport 50ma 350
Door and I/O 425ma 1000 Power and cable length assume 250 ma for door strike and 100ma for Wiegand reader. See chart below for additional power info about this module.

Door and I/O Module

The Door and I/O module can supply power to either a door strike, a Wiegand device, or both. Because of this maximum cable length will vary depending on both the input voltage supplied to- the Flex System hub and the power drawn by the connected devices.
